BIO
Resem Verkron (1999) is an Angolan artist working in film and electronic music. He is part of two major cultural movements in Luanda: the urban art collective Verkron Collective – from which his artistic surname derives – and the independent film production company Geração 80.
He defines his work as “emotional Afrofuturism”, in response to the Afrofuturism that emerged in the United States. He was recently awarded the PALOP New Talent Prize by the Kugoma Film Forum in Mozambique. He co-directed The Adventures of Angosat (national premiere at AFRIKALDIA), the first musical film ever shot in Angola, which has recently received awards in Portugal and the United States. The film’s art direction was by Gegé M’bakudi, with whom he collaborates on most of his projects. Resem Verkron is also the author of several video art pieces developed during a residency at the Hangar Artistic Research Centre in Lisbon, which have been exhibited in art galleries in Angola and Portugal. He made his directorial debut with the short film Lola & Mami (2021), a reflection on toxic masculinity. His next project, still in development, was selected at the most recent edition of the Clermont-Ferrand Festival (France).
He usually works as a director of photography in Luanda, where he resides.
