Based in Kisangani in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the city where he grew up, Derhwa Kasunzu tells stories from home. As versatility is a necessity in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he trained at Studios Kabako in documentary writing, as well as in sound and image cinematography techniques and post-production. His career has been shaped by encounters with Faustin Linyekula, artistic director of Kabako Studios, Gaël Teicher, producer and screenwriter for La Traverse films in Montreuil, France, and Franck Moka and Dieudo Hamadi.
In 2018, he directed his first short film, Inkerson. Catcher (2025), his first feature film, won the Samba Félix NDiaye Award for Best First or Second Feature-Length Documentary Film at the 29th edition of Fespaco in 2025.
