BIO<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Director and chief OPV, Hassen Ferhani was born in Algiers in 1986. His work has always been rooted in his city, where he co-hosted the Chrysalide<\/em> association film club and directed his first film Bays of Algiers<\/em> (2006).<\/p>

After taking part in the FEMIS summer training (2008) he directed awarded short documentary films (Visions du R\u00e9el, FID Marseille). His first feature, Roundabout in My Head<\/em>, was released in February 2016 and multi-awarded (FID Grand Prize in French competition, McMillan-Stewart Fellowship of Harvard, first film winning two Tanit d\u2019Or at Carthage Festival\u2026). His second feature, 143 Sahara Street<\/em>, (AFRIKALDIA 2022) won the Silver Leopard for Best Film in Locarno in 2019.<\/p>

STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>

I wanted to film Algiers, to move away from the usual representations. To explore the \u201cunderbelly of Algiers,\u201d to borrow the title of one of my father\u2019s books. Just as Ameziane seeks to avoid Orientalism in his literary works, I wanted to distance myself from it in filmmaking. It\u2019s also a film about seeing: we learn to see, especially the jacarandas, these majestic trees present throughout the city and to which we pay little attention.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

(\u2026) The soul of a city lies in its inhabitants. This is present in the film, but also in the novel and in Ameziane’s way of life. He could talk to government ministers and local youths on the same day with the same enthusiasm. I was lucky enough to grow up in a neighborhood in Algiers where we lived alongside all walks of life.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

(\u2026) When I asked my father what the tree in his book represented, he told me that the jacaranda symbolized the refusal to give up, and the resilience of poetry. He often said to me, \u201cIt was women who saved us in the 1990s. They were beautiful, they dressed well, they went out\u2026 They carried the torch of beauty.\u201d With the jacaranda, he found the perfect symbol. This majestic, colorful tree that no one sees because no one pays attention to it. In the unstable world we know today, this attention to poetry is, I believe, a true form of resistance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
